How to Stop Students Leaving School Without Permission
Almost every school has a pupil who leaves at lunchtime and is not missed until the afternoon register. The fix starts at the gate, not in the classroom.
A pupil who leaves school without permission is a discipline problem and a safety problem at the same time. If something happens to that child outside the compound, the first question will be: why did nobody know they had left?
Why pupils slip out unnoticed
- The gate records arrivals but not departures.
- Lunchtime is busy and the gatekeeper cannot check every face.
- Afternoon registers are taken late, or not at all.
- There is a gap in the fence nobody has reported.
Record departures, not just arrivals
The simplest change is to record every departure the same way as every arrival: a scan at the gate. Once leaving is recorded, a pupil who walks out at 12:30 is on the record at 12:30 — and a pupil leaving before home time can be stopped and asked for permission.

Every early departure should have a reason and, for younger pupils, a named person collecting them. When a pupil is sent home or collected, the office records why and who took them, and the parent is told automatically. That removes the ambiguity that pupils exploit.
Connect the gate to the classroom
When a teacher marks a lesson register, a pupil who arrived at the gate but is missing from class stands out immediately. That is often the first sign of a pupil hiding on the compound or leaving through the fence — and it is caught in the lesson, not at the end of the day.
Do not forget the fence
No system can record a pupil climbing a wall. Walk the fence once a term, fix the gaps, and treat the gate as the only way in and out. The digital record then tells you something true.
