Parent Communication in Schools: WhatsApp, SMS, Phone Calls or Automated Alerts?
Every school uses more than one channel. The trouble starts when nobody knows which one is official.
Ugandan schools reach parents in four main ways. Each has a place. None does everything. Here is what each is good at, and where it breaks.
WhatsApp groups
Good for community: quick chat, photos from sports day, parents helping each other. Weak as an official channel. Important notices sink under hundreds of messages, anyone can post, private matters leak into public groups, and there is no reliable record of who saw what.
SMS
Reaches almost every phone, including basic ones, which is a real strength. But every message costs money, long messages split and arrive out of order, and bulk SMS is easy to ignore. For daily arrival news to hundreds of families, the cost adds up fast.
Phone calls
The right channel for serious, sensitive conversations — a voice carries care that a text cannot. The wrong channel for routine information: it does not scale, it depends on staff time, and it leaves no record.
App notifications
Best for facts that happen every day to every family: arrivals, departures, a child sent home, notices from the school. They are free to send, arrive instantly, go only to the parents linked to that child, and leave a record. They need a smartphone and a parent who has signed in.

Should we close our class WhatsApp groups?+
Not necessarily. Keep them for community if parents value them, but send official information through one channel the school controls.
