How Accurate Are Paper Attendance Registers?
A register can be neat, complete and signed — and still be wrong. Accuracy is not about handwriting; it is about how the record is made.
Ask any head teacher whether their registers are accurate and most will say "mostly". That word is doing a lot of work. A register that is mostly accurate is fine for the end-of-term total. It is not fine when a parent disputes an absence, an inspector asks about a date, or a child cannot be found.
Human error is built in
A teacher calling sixty names in a noisy classroom will mishear some of them. A tired teacher marking the register at the end of a double lesson will tick from memory. None of this is dishonest; it is simply what happens when a person is asked to be a recording device several times a day.
Missing entries and wrong times
When a teacher is absent, the register is often not marked at all, or marked afterwards by someone who was not there. And because a tick carries no time, a pupil who walked in at 9:15 looks exactly like one who arrived at 7:30.
Proxy marking
"Present, sir" is easy to say on a friend's behalf. In a large class, the teacher cannot check every voice against every face, and the absence disappears from the record.

How a digital workflow makes it consistent
Accuracy improves when the record is made by an event rather than a person: the pupil's card is scanned at the gate, and the arrival is recorded with its time. The same rule applies to every pupil, every day. If something needs correcting, the correction is added alongside the original rather than replacing it, so the record always shows what happened and what was changed.
